Alex’s enthusiasm and love for the musical diversity of the Balkans grew continuously; for him, national borders never imposed boundaries on music.
Strong traditions, diverse influences, curiosity and openness to the new were, for him, the heart of Balkan music.
This led to the founding of Ostbeatbend in 2012.
Alex played drums with OBB until 2018, when health reasons led him to hand the role over to Marcel.
Alex Zechbauer passed away in February 2020.
