Robert Friedl

Clarinet / saxophone

Robert Friedl is a Salzburg musician active across many musical genres.

His work ranges from large classical orchestras, including appearances as a soloist, to big bands and smaller ensembles such as duos and trios in jazz, Latin music and world music.

With clarinet and saxophone as his principal instruments, he performs successfully both nationally and internationally.

After studying classical music at Mozarteum University Salzburg, he passionately explored the fascinating world of jazz as an autodidact.

Thanks to Alegre Correa and Pedro Tagliani, his curiosity and deep interest in musical diversity expanded to include music from South America, especially Brazil.

Discovering a wide range of musical cultures, performance practices and interpretations led to an intensive engagement with world music.

Engagements followed with ensembles devoted to the music of the Caribbean, Africa, the Orient and India, before a new chapter in world music opened for Robert Friedl: Ostbeatbend and the music of the Balkans.
